Die Generation der „Kriegskinder“ bildete den Grundpfeiler und die Mentalitätsbestände der Nachkriegszeit: „Mit den ‚Kriegskindern‘ wird mehr beschrieben als nur die Alterskohorte der zwischen 1930 bis 1945 Geborenen. Ein bestimmtes Muster und Setting von Erfahrungen, das auf die Umstände des Krieges zurückverweise, präge das soziale Verhalten dieser Menschen bis in die Gegenwart, wird postuliert: der Krieg als eine Art ‚Zeitheimat‘. Das Erleben von Flucht und Vertreibung zum Beispiel, Tod und Verwundung, Hunger, Leid und Elend oder der Schrecken im Zwielicht des Luftschutzkellers, nicht zuletzt möglicher Verlust von Angehörigen, Eltern oder Geschwistern, die alles habe (…) individuell und generationell tiefe Spuren hinterlassen, (…).“ (S. 9f)Dies geschieht aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln: Kinder von Tätern, die früh lernten, dass der Krieg aus angeblich hehren Idealen geführt wurde, Kinder, die ermordet, deportiert und vertrieben wurden und dies ihr gesamtes weiteres Leben prägte und anderen Schicksalen und Lebensumständen. Kinder deutscher Kriegsgefangener, jugendliche Flüchtlinge in der DDR, das Leben mit dem toten Vater in der BRD und Polen werden ebenso geschildert wie minderjährige Häftlinge der KZ’s, russische Kriegskinder, die Emigration jüdischer Kinder oder die Erfahrungen jüdisch-polnischer Kinder in der Sowjetunion Außerdem wird die Rezeption der Schicksale der Kriegskindergeneration in Film, Literatur oder Politik nachgegangen und analysiert, wobei die Kultur der Erinnerung je nach Land und Umfeld höchst unterschiedlich ausfällt. Besonders spannend ist in diesem Zusammenhang der Artikel über Kinder- und Jugendtagebücher als Erinnerungsort.Dass Kindheiten im Krieg in vielen Fällen ein Trauma nach sich ziehen, gerade bei älteren Menschen ist zu beobachten, dass noch Jahrzehnte nach schrecklichen Erlebnissen Ängste hervorbrechen und diese psychotherapeutisch behandelt werden müssen. Dies erlebt man gegenwärtig vor allem bei syrischen Flüchtlingskindern, die traumatisiert behandelt werden müssen. Ping Fu tells a fantastic story. It had a profound effect on me. I did not care about the historical or political dimension of the backdrop. What inspired me most is her attitude in personal and business affairs.This book has given me more confidence in my own attitude and leadership style. I embrace and admit to weakness rather than hiding it. I take a pragmatic approach to everything. And I always look for cooperation.Some quotes from the book and comments: 1. People succeed through "a combination of effort, intelligence and luck". 2. She quoted Viktor Frankl's 'Main in search of meaning': "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." I cherish Frankl. He has survived a german concentration camp, losing his wife there. His biography and outlook on life closely resemble that of Ping Fu. 3. "Later in life, I realized that many students learn the theory behind engineering and mathematical principles without ever applying their education through hands-on experience." 4. The book is Ping Fu's story, told by Ping Fu, as she remembers it. The book is not, nor does it aspire to be, a factual retelling of the events of the time. She writes "the first step in luring anyone into your worldview was creating an engaging narrative". 5. She incorporates emotion and feelings into her leadership style. That is an attitude that fits my personality well. 6. "Think about moving forward to make personal or social progress, rather than moving higher to gain a superior position". 7. A major theme in her life seems to be change. She has often had to deal with tremendous change, either by moving or switching jobs on purpose, or caused by an outside force. I think her ability to manage change, to cope with it, to accept it, to not fear it, plays a role in her success. 8. Nobody does it alone! And nothing gets handed to you! Both are true in her case.Everyone should write a memoir. Everyone should tell his or her story, even if it is only for a few people.

das Buch erzählt die sehr interessante Lebensgeschichte einer Chinesin. Es ist für mich als Fremdsprachenbuch mit mittleren Kenntnissen sehr gut zu lesen, ich kann es nur empfehlen.

Ich habe mir dieses Buch zum Geburtstag schenken lassen und es im Urlaub gelesen. Für Englisch Lernende mit guten Sprachkenntnissen ist es überhaupt kein Problem. Die Geschichte ist für Europäer, die gerne etwas über die chinesische Vergangenheit wissen wollen gut geeignet. Ich kann das Buch jedem empfehlen.
